De titel van mijn post citeert uit een persbericht van University of Bristol, 20 maart 2013: Expression of emotion in books declined during 20th century, study finds.*

While the trends found in this study are very clear, their interpretation is still open.  A remaining question, the authors say, is whether word usage represents real behaviour in a population, or possibly an absence of that behaviour which is increasingly played out via literary fiction.  Books may not reflect the real population any more than catwalk models reflect the average body.

In deze studie lees ik niet alleen interessants over de evolutie in het gebruik van woorden voor emoties (woede/boosheid, afkeer, vrees/angst, blijdschap/vreugde, droefheid/verdriet, verwondering/verbazing) in vijf miljoen Engelstalige gedigitaliseerde romans van de 20e eeuw – dankzij Google –

Dr Acerbi concluded: “Today we have tools that are revolutionising our understanding of human culture and of how it changes through time.   Interdisciplinary studies such as this can detect clear patterns by looking at an unprecedented amount of data, such as tweets, Google trends, blogs, or, in our case, digitised books, that are freely available to everyone interested in them.” [Ik link.]

ook over de evolutie van de stijl in American en British English sinds de jaren 1960, en de mogelijke maatschappelijke interpretatie ervan.

Co-author Professor Alex Bentley said: “We don’t know exactly what happened in the Sixties but our results show that this is the precise moment in which literary American and British English started to diverge.  We can only speculate whether this was connected, for example, to the baby-boom or to the rising of counterculture. Terwijl Vlaanderen zich op deze eerste lentedag buigt over de Staat van de Poëzie – ik hoop erover te lezen op sociale media – verwonder ik me over de verrassende vondsten en de opening op nieuwe perspectieven van interdisciplinair onderzoek van de taal van de roman (computerwetenschappen, cognitieve/evolutionaire antropologie, cultuurwetenschappen).

Altijd weer de schatkist van de taal opnieuw openbreken met de tools van de tijd: big data, wat een rijkdom. Ook Neder-L informeert me met de regelmaat van een klok over soortgelijk computationeel onderzoek. Het Meertens Instituut bijvoorbeeld kan niet meer zonder.
